Gernika, País Vasco - 4 de abril

Leaving Bilbao... stumbled through a mercado.

Euskara y español. Apparently euskara is the oldest language in the world that is still used today.

Pulpo... he only wanted to shake my hand...

GERNIKA!
During la guerra civil de España, Franco asked for aid from Hitler to conquer País Vasco. Hitler agreed, but only under the condition that he could do anything he wanted. On the 26th of April, 1937. The Luftwaffe destoyed 70% of this spanish pueblo in 2 hours and 46 minutes. There was no military objective to bomb Gernika, as Gernika had no soilders there. Firebombs and bombs of destruction rained on this town, killing thousands of women and children. Franco later blamed it on the anarchists.

Pablo Picasso made this painting to remember the day of 26th of April 1937.
